Iran threatens closure of the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has decided to rattle its saber and threaten the Strait of Hormuz. A general over the Iranian navy claims that Iran now has full control over the strait as well as the whole Persian Gulf. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo responded Monday night and refuted that claim in no uncertain terms. Hormuz is a choke point for oil export traffic and disruptions there would adversely affect oil supplies and national economies worldwide. Such an action on Iran’s part would cause a severe reaction from more than just the United States. There are many more details below.

The head of the navy of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, Gen. Alireza Tangsiri, said that Iran had full control of both the Persian Gulf itself and the Strait of Hormuz that leads into it, Reuters reported.


Secretary of State Mike Pompeo responded Monday night: “The Islamic Republic of Iran does not control the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait is an international waterway. The United States will continue to work with our partners to ensure freedom of navigation and free flow of commerce in international waterways.”
